Most zircons used in jewelry come from deposits in Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Burma. Interestingly, zircon deposits are also found in the Czech Republic.
- To begin with, it is good to clarify what zircon actually is. It is a chemical compound, unlike diamond, which is of natural origin.Zircons are also, of course, more brittle and softer than diamonds – which may also be one of the deciding factors.
- At first glance, however, you cannot distinguish zircons from diamonds. At a glance at the new ring your newly engaged friend is showing off, you cannot tell with an untrained eye whether it is zircon or not. However, if you were to see the aforementioned engagement ring a year or two later, you would probably already recognize that it is not a diamond. Unlike zircon, it remains beautifully glossy and sparkling for many years, whereas zircon loses its sparkling charm after just one year. Thanks to the fact that diamond is extremely hard and its surface remains undamaged, it can beautifully reflect rays of light and make the entire ring shine even after many years. Unfortunately, this option is unrealistic with softer zircon.
