HISTORY AND TRADITIONS
- the mineral got its name from its pattern resembling flowers, which are actually fossilized corals and shells. The correct name for this stone is “agatized coral” or “agatized fossil coral”
- it was formed through a natural process in which prehistoric dead coral skeletons deposited on the seabed in silica-rich waters were gradually replaced over approximately 20 million years by agate, chalcedony, or microcrystalline quartz
- fossil corals should not be confused with modern corals originating from endangered coral reefs
- fossil corals are also much heavier and harder than the skeletons of contemporary corals
COLOR: the beads may occur in various color patterns, most commonly in white, pink, brown, gray, or beige. Many of these fossils may look exactly as they did when they were alive, only now in petrified form.
AMMONITE FOSSIL
- Ammonite is an extinct predatory cephalopod that lived in the seas approximately 425 to 65.5 million years ago and reached sizes ranging from several centimeters to tens of centimeters. The oldest ammonites date from the Lower Devonian period; they became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous. They were characterized by spirally coiled calcium carbonate shells, which have been preserved as petrified remains in marine sediments. Interestingly, the oldest finds come from the vicinity of Prague.

- Orthoceras is an extinct cephalopod that lived 350–400 million years ago in the shallow seas of what is now Morocco (Erfoud locality). The animal lived in an elongated conically shaped shell.

- Shark teeth are among the favorite fossils. Sharks’ teeth essentially keep growing back throughout their lives, so their finds are very abundant. We offer a tooth of the shark species Otodus obliquus, which grew to a size of 9 to 12 meters. Its origin dates back 50 to 60 million years and to the Khouribga locality in Morocco.

Fossil coral, or more precisely mineralogically an “agatized coral” (there is no exact equivalent in Czech for the English term “Agatized Coral”), is a stone that has been and continues to be worn by people for many centuries, in many countries.
- the stone is formed when silicon dioxide hardens in ocean water (“agatizes”) and replaces limestone corals with one of the forms of the quartz mineral such as agate or various chalcedonies, this long process of gradual fossilization - 20 to 30 million years leads to a formation in which one mineral replaced the original mineral without it losing its original shape
- corals are of animal origin, and it is the bodies of these creatures that lived millions of years ago which now create beautiful “flower or star” patterns in fossil corals
- Agatized fossil corals can display a wide range of natural colors, from white and pink, through brown, gray, black, yellow to orange and red.

It is precisely because of these minerals that fossil corals are often used in the production of medicines and dietary supplements. Raw fossil corals are also used for industrial water purification filters because they can remove chemical impurities from water, such as chlorine and formaldehyde.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Fossil coral was formed over a process of replacement lasting millions of years, during which the original calcium carbonate (coral) was replaced by silicon dioxide (SiO2; silicon dioxide). This unique preservation process may result in varying concentrations of minerals in fossil coral stones.Silicon dioxide can range from a light amorphous form to the opaline dense form of chalcedony. Some fossil coral specimens may be mistaken for other types of agate, such as moss agate or dendritic agate, but in general the pattern and color of fossil coral are quite distinct. Almost all fossil coral deposits are located either in Indonesia or in the United States (Florida and Georgia). However, only Indonesian fossilized coral is considered the most desirable and unique for making jewelry.
The density and color of fossil corals may vary depending on the specific chemical replacement of limestone by silicon dioxide, manganese, iron, or various other minerals. The crystal structure of these beads is hexagonal, forming hexagonal prisms with a hardness of 6.5–7 on the Mohs hardness scale.
