CHRYSOBERYL JEWELRY

Jewelers greatly appreciate large gemstone specimens. Jewelry-grade green "cat's eye," depending on the size and complexity of the cut, costs from $50 to $100 per carat, and multicolored samples of highly transparent cymophane are even more expensive. The most expensive stone jewelry can cost up to 1 20 dollars per carat.

Crystals in bluish-pink and blue-green shades are often used in jewelry making. For lockets, pendants, and earrings, alexandrite is usually well-suited to a gold setting. Hoops, headbands, rings, and rings combined with zirconia and zirconia, as well as patterned crystals with lower transparency, are considered the most democratic jewelry.

  • Jewelry with minerals can be worn by people of any age and gender; there are no restrictions.
  • The gemstone is especially recommended for older people because it has a serious health impact.
  • It is assumed that it is necessary to wear two pieces of jewelry with alexandrite at the same time.
  • Jewelry interspersed with chrysoberyl is worn only during the day to indicate high social status. It is not recommended to wear jewelry continuously; it is better to take it off at night.

COLOR AND VARIETY: Golden, yellow with a brown tint, green with red

  • Alexandrite is a chameleon stone with pronounced pleochroism, i.e., The ability to change color depending on the lighting. It does not have the usual yellow hue for chrysoberyl: in daylight it is a blue-green stone, in artificial light it is pink-crimson. This property of alexandrite is its characteristic feature and distinguishes it from all other chrysoberyls. Garnets and some sapphire specimens similarly change their color.
  • Tsimofan - “cat's eye”. The stone is yellowish with a white stripe. It is processed in a special way as a “cabochon”, i.e. Polishing without edges. Special emphasis is placed on the brilliance and inner radiance of the natural mineral. “Cat's eye” is not just chrysoberyl; it is also a name used, for example, for other similar stones with an iridescent effect, “moon rock.”

APPEARANCE: Transparent crystals with many facets. Alexandrites have a greenish tint in daylight and turn red under artificial light. Cat's eye and cymophane resemble an eye.

LOCALITIES: Chrysoberyl is commonly available. A cat's eye can be expensive. Alexandrite is rare.

  • Basically, the stone is found in mica schist and granite in the form of small inclusions.
  • Chrysoberyl sometimes grows into cavities of other stones. The mineral is mined in Ceylon, Madagascar, Brazil, the United States of America, and the emerald mines of the Urals.
  • Cat's eye can be found in deposits in Brazil, China, India, Zimbabwe, and Sri Lanka, and alexandrite is found in Russia, Madagascar, and Tanzania.

HISTORY AND TRADITION

The name chrysoberyl comes from the combination of the words: the Greek “chrysos,” meaning “golden,” according to the color of the mineral, and beryl, according to its chemical composition. The first mention of such a gem was four millennia ago in the descriptions of the ancient Indian medical work “Rasaraja Tarangini,” which provided information about a stone with the color of bamboo leaves, with iridescence and shining like a cat’s eye.The mineral occurs only rarely under natural conditions.

  • In the treatise of the ancient Roman learned writer Pliny the Elder, who lived at the beginning of our era, a similar gemstone is described as one of the varieties of beryl. At various times it was called Chrysopalus, prismatic corundum, alumberyl.
  • Russian mineralogist and academician Alexander Fersman proved that the gemstone was already known and found use in ancient Rus under the name zaberzat.
  • In the process of scientific research, scientists came to the conclusion that the rare gemstone is formed in mica schists, gneiss, granite, and granitic pegmatites under hydrothermal action, when beryllium combines with aluminum oxides.
  • You may occasionally come across minerals with admixtures of chromium, iron, or titanium oxides. Chromium impurities increase the stone's strength and optical properties, which increases its value.
  • Perhaps for this reason, the geologist A. Werner only discovered it in 1789, and the description of the mineral appeared in 1790. The authors focused on the physical properties of chrysoberyl, which, after serious research, ceased to be a mystery.
  • Natural and cut stones are exhibited in many museums and private collections. The best-known is a chrysoberyl weighing forty-five carats. It is housed in the British Museum of Natural History.
  • The former owner of the green-yellow gemstone with a brilliant sheen was Henry Hope. Chrysoberyl was given the owner's name, the name "hope".

FACTS

  • Natural alexandrites found on the global market are not treated in any way. They are sold untreated because heat exposure and radiation have no effect: the color remains the same. Sometimes they may resort to oiling, and "cat's eye" channels can be cleaned with acid.
  • In 2014, an alexandrite found in the Urals weighing 21.41 carats was sold at auction for XNUMX million dollars.
  • The color-change effect in rare minerals was named in honor of alexandrite. It is called the “alexandrite effect.”
  • In tsarist times, chrysoberyl was worn exclusively by nobles and kings, which is why the mineral was considered a luxurious royal stone, indicating high social status.
