    • Twice a month, you must wash the gemstone jewelry under running cold water. If the mineral darkens, it should be left overnight in water together with hematite.

    MAGICAL PROPERTIES

    The stone truly has magical properties that were recorded as early as the Middle Ages. Its power is no less than that of the most expensive gemstones. Wizards use the cross to communicate with the other world, summon spirits, and enter a state of trance, meditation, and foretelling the future.

    • In magical circles, the cross is called the "Seeing Stone" - it helps one form the right opinion about both a person and an event from the past or the future.
    • For people with paranormal abilities, the stone helps penetrate the mysteries of the Universe, gain sacred knowledge, and reach a new level of spirituality.
    • It is known with certainty that Nostradamus never parted with the Andalusite amulet.

    COLORS AND VARIETIES
    The dominant color of the crystal is greenish-brown. But because natural stone has strong pleochroism, there are specimens in yellow, yellow-green, red, and reddish-brown tones.

    LOCALITY: Chiastolite deposits are found in various parts of the world.

    Spain: in Asturias, near the Navia River and in Quintana del Castillo. Chile at the bottom of the La Cruz River in Laraquete (Bio-Bio Region) is what defines the handicraft industry in the region. South Australia (Orali area). China (Hunan Province). France (Brittany). Austria (Tyrol). Russia. Brazil. Myanmar. Sri Lanka. USA (around Georgetown). Canada (Quebec).

    HISTORY AND TRADITION

    The stone immediately attracted attention, changing color depending on the lighting. This phenomenon is called pleochroism. The stone was highly sought after among the knights of the Order of Malta and Catholic monks because of another property - when cut open, a light-colored cross appeared inside it. Therefore, andalusite is often called the “Maltese cross” or a little cross.

    The stone has also been known for thousands of years under other names:

    • "Poor man's alexandrite" - because of its visual similarity to a first-rate gemstone;
    • Lapis Lucifer - "Lucifer's stone"; referring to the biblical story of the fallen angel cast down to Earth;
    • "Fairy cross" - according to legend, the tears of fairies mourning Jesus fell onto the stones and became crosses;
    • cross stone - this is what medieval Europeans called it.
    • The name of the mineral comes from the Greek word “kiastos” (marked with a cross); in lapidary it is called lapis-crucifer (crucifixion) and is described as a means of driving away evil spirits. Chiastolite was discovered in 1754 in El Cardoso in Spanish Andalusia, but people had known about the mineral for centuries on all continents.
    • The Celts used it as a symbol of identity. Between Patagonia in Chile and Argentina, in the region inhabited by the Araucana Indians, several deposits of chiastolite rocks can be found.
    • For the Araucanians, stone crosses are the souls of warriors who refused to be slaves and gave their lives for their land in battles with the Spaniards.
    • According to legend, chiastolites are actually fossilized holy relics. In the Middle Ages, it was worn as an amulet against the evil eye; today, chiastolite is considered a symbol of devotion, a stone that brings a sense of peace in death and gives hope for rebirth.

    PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

    Chiastolite belongs to the group of island silicates, in which the silicate tetrahedra are not directly linked to each other. Stone is almost always opaque.

    Orthorhombic mineral, an aluminum silicate Al2SiO5, named after its first known locality, Andalusia in Spain.In nature, there are three types of minerals that have the same chemical composition, but differ in their crystal lattice. They are sillimanite, kyanite, and andalusite.

    • Chiastolite - a variety of andalusite - distinguished by an interesting carbonaceous inclusion that forms a dark cross in the center of the mineral. It usually occurs in metamorphosed rocks, where the minerals corundum and kyanite are often combined.
    • However, it can also occur in igneous rocks, especially granite. There are several versions related to the forming process. The classical and generally accepted theory of the metamorphic mineralogical process explains the formation of curious little crosses by the selective incrustation of impurities.
    • Rapidly growing andalusite crystals accumulate carbon impurities (mainly graphite) only at certain points (corners). As inclusions grow, crystal growth slows down. Given that the graphite forming radial aggregates is absorbed by the porphyroblastic structure of andalusite, the inclusions are concentrated in a characteristic pattern. The growth-slowing cycle repeats and forms a “Maltese cross” in the stone.
