- Bright green stones reminiscent of emerald color are mined in the Urals. They are also called Ural emeralds.
- Dark green to gray nuggets are considered Scottish and are found in the Glen Sciag deposit. This mineral is called skiagite.
- Brown-green stones are mined by Indians at the Hanle deposit. This uraniferous mineral was called Hanleite.
The transparency of the stone, like its color, varies. There are specimens of "pure water," as well as transparent or cloudy samples with various inclusions.
SITE
The finest gemstones in the entire world are still considered to be the Russian stones from the Saranovskoye deposit in the Urals. High-quality specimens are also found in Scottish mines.Finnish deposits are rich in extremely large uvarovite crystals. The stones are up to 1,5 cm in size.
Small mining sites are located in the USA, Canada, South Africa, Turkey, and Norway.Uvarovite is also mined in deposits in Italy, India, Finland, and Poland. Between the Himalayas and the Pyrenees lies a jewel.
The largest natural uvarovite crystals are extracted from aggregate and cut into an emerald cut. However, such stones are not used as standalone inserts in jewelry. Their jewelry weight reaches a maximum of 1 carat. These gemstones are usually complemented by diamonds or emeralds.
HISTORY AND TRADITION
Uvarovite is a rare garnet mineral... The gemstone was discovered in 1832. Deposits of the emerald nugget are located in the territory of the Saranovskoye field — a place where many Ural gemstones were mined. In the same year, the chemist Hermann Hess introduced the stone uvarovite into mineralogy with a detailed description and classification. The mineral was named in honor of Empress Catherine's godfather, Count Sergei Uvarov.
The enchanting green of this mineral is comparable to the green of an emerald. Uvarovite was discovered only recently compared to other gemstones, but this royal stone has managed to win the hearts of people all over the world. The Ural nugget also has unique properties that no green mineral from the depths of the Earth can boast
- Catherine herself appreciated the extraordinary beauty of the Ural emerald. And Count Uvarov, as president of the Imperial Academy of Sciences, played an important role in the mining and study of the properties of uvarovite.
- A characteristic feature of the mineral is small crystals measuring 2–3 mm, forming fine-grained druses. Later, deposits of nuggets were also found on other continents of the planet, but the gemstone rightfully bears the name “Ural emerald,” after the place where it was first discovered.
- Uvarovite quickly gained popularity around the world. Demand for jewelry with Ural emeralds has remained strong for almost 200 years. In the literature, the gemstone appears under the names: Ural emerald, chrome garnet, “trautvinit - trautwinit” (in honor of the American geologist J. Trautweina), “chrome garnet,” “imperial stone,” and hanleite (mined in India in the Hanli deposit area - hanleite).
