ZODIAC SIGN:

  • Cerussite is the stone of fire.
  • It is believed to be the best patron for Leos and Sagittarians. The influence on other zodiac signs has not been studied.

COLOR: White, gray, gray-black, yellow.
APPEARANCE: White and yellow translucent crystals. Sometimes gray or black grains resting in the parent rock.

OCCURRENCE: The natural origin of cerussite is caused by the oxidation processes of primary lead ores as well as by water circulation. Minerals such as galena are transformed through alteration into secondary lead ores such as cerussite and anglesite. Cerussite occurs together with other lead, copper, or zinc ores. The mineral often forms as a metamorphosis product after anglesite, galena, and phosgenite, indicating a typical transformation process.

SITE:

Lead mines in many countries around the world contain tons of mineral within their depths. The best examples of transparent large crystals are known for:

  • Namibia (Tsumeb), USA (New Mexico, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Arizona).

Arizona nuggets have a cat's eye effect after polishing into a cabochon. Australia, Tunisia, Russia (Siberia), and Bohemia are also rich in deposits of high-quality mineral resources. Australian patterns are valued for the quality of their gemstones. The same gemstones are imported from the island of Tasmania.

The Italian mines of Montevecchio and Monteponi are characterized by the presence of small but transparent specimens. European countries where cerussite is still found:

  • Germany, Scotland, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Austria, Poland

In addition to Namibia, cerussite is mined in the territories of other African countries - Zambia, Congo, Zimbabwe, Tunisia.
Russian mining sites - Altai Krai, east of Transbaikalia. A lead nugget is also found in the territory of Kazakhstan.

SPELLS AND MAGIC

  • Our ancestors believed that the gemstone gives a person confidence in themselves and their strength. Cerussite amulets were intended for those who, by the nature of their activities, were constantly in company, communicated a great deal, and made acquaintances.
  • The stone also served as a household amulet. The crystals were placed at the entrance to the house, on the outside of the door. It was believed that such a talisman would protect the home from negative energy, theft, or fire.
  • At the same time, the nugget was actively used by black magicians to harm the enemy. To this end, crystals were placed among the personal belongings of the person they were trying to harm.

HISTORY AND TRADITION

Cerussite is a mineral of special value as a lead ore. The stone is also an interesting mineralogical exhibit thanks to its enviable diversity of crystalline forms of occurrence. The use of cerussite by ancient peoples is surprising because, from the perspective of modern science, such an application is dangerous to human health.

  • Information about the use of cerussite dates back to ancient Egypt. The ground mineral was called by the Latin name “cerussa” and was added to paint in place of pigment. To this, the sifted powder was mixed with an oil base, resulting in a beautiful color that lay softly.
  • Thanks to its excellent covering properties, cerussite powder was valued by women. Antique cosmetics did not clump into lumps; they lay on the skin. Beautiful ladies became so fond of this tool that the heyday of the Roman Empire was marked by the abuse of lead white.

The modern name "cerussite" was introduced into everyday use by the Austrian-born mineralogist V. Gaidinger in 1845. Synonyms - white lead ore, acrozite, lead string.

INTERESTING FACTS

The largest of the mined cerussites is considered to be a specimen weighing 898 carats. The Royal Museum of Canada keeps the record copy.
Unusual acoustic properties help distinguish cerussite from other accompanying rocks during mining. When struck or dropped, the mineral rings out as if thousands of little beads had scattered or glass had shattered.

DEFINITION OF AUTHENTICITY

  • Cerussite has an external resemblance to other associated minerals - anglesite, barite, scheelite, celestine. Nugget can be distinguished from any of these stones by its characteristic twins. Under laboratory conditions, cerussite differs from anglesite by its chemical reactions with acids - the mineral does not react to hydrochloric acid, but contact with nitric acid causes vigorous effervescence.
  • In the world of jewelry, you may come across a counterfeit made from lead stone. The mineral serves as a raw material for pearl production. Iridescent reflections imitate a pearlescent surface in the best possible way. Pressed cerussite beads are very difficult to distinguish from natural pearls
