LOCALITIES
Epidote is widely distributed throughout the world - it is mined on an industrial scale. Deposits in the Ural Mountains are considered the most valuable: these nuggets have a rare green color and a transparent structure. They know about the stone in the Kumachinsky and Nazyamsky mountains. They are also found on the Kola Peninsula and in the Kemerovo and Irkutsk regions.
The most beautiful and largest epidote crystals in the Czech Republic were found near the village of Sobotín (not far from the town of Šumperk - northern Moravia - Jeseníky).
One kilometer from this village is the Pfarrerb mineralogical natural monument “Pfarrerb”.This name comes from the originally German designation of the site and in translation means "priest". However, in 2013 the site was declared protected, and the collection of minerals, or even digging for them, is prohibited here!
Smaller samples of epidotes were also discovered at that time in several other areas. Among the best-known are: Markovice, Malešov, Měděnec, Vlastějovice, Rožná, Kutná Hora, Vernířovice, Čáslav, Žulová, and Vápenná.
Today, epidote is also mined in the USA, Mexico, Brazil, Norway, and Australia. Samples of decent quality can be found in the territory of these countries.
Epidotes found in earlier times are therefore today very rare and highly valued. High-quality epidotes are becoming scarcer, and so their prices are gradually rising.
- in nature, it forms individual free crystals (rarely even terminated ones), as well as crystal intergrowths (druses), but it is also sometimes found in association with other minerals (most often white to yellowish albite)
- epidote crystals or small crystals have the shape of bladed columnar cylinders, are striated, and are often also distinctly glassy or pearly lustrous
- on the hardness scale, epidote ranks at 6 - 7, and is therefore relatively brittle
HISTORY AND TRADITION
The name of the mineral came to us from the Greek language and literally translates as "increase" or "growth". The crystal was first described more than three hundred years ago: during this time, it managed to change about 10 names. For some time, it was generally considered a type of tourmaline. The stone received its official name in 1801: at that time it was mentioned in the works of the French physicist Haüy. A scientist proved that epidote is an independent stone that has its own varieties.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
From a chemical point of view, epidote is a complex calcium aluminum and ferric silicate. It sometimes also contains small amounts of manganese or chromium. Its druses (for example with fibrous ferro-actinolite, apatite, and adularia) are an ornament to every collection.
