HISTORY AND TRADITION

The first mention of the unusual jewel appeared in 1925.

During a walk along the shores of the White Sea, the mineral was discovered by the Soviet mineralogist Alexander Fersman. The stone's luster reminded the scientists of the shimmering sea on a summer night.
The Belomorite stone looks like a drop of the sea glowing under moonlight - a type of feldspar. Sometimes the mineral is incorrectly called moonstone because of its outward resemblance (the same pearly hue), but these are different natural stones, and for a professional it is not difficult to distinguish one from the other. The popular name for the gemstone is Fisheye. Indeed, there is a similarity here.

  • Academic A. Fersman, world-renowned in geochemistry and mineralogy, is known as the discoverer of Belomorite (as well as a number of others). This happened at the beginning of the 20th century. century. The name reveals the place where the stone is concentrated – the coast of the White Sea.
  • The crystallographer poetically described the mineral’s radiance as mysterious, even magical. In the fragments of the gemstone, the scientist discerned reflections of iridescent silk. In the thinnest section of the mineral, under polarized light, I saw the smoothness of a white linen tablecloth.
  • The scientist, of course, also revealed the qualitative properties of the stone. Belomorite forms when erupted magma cools. It occurs in the form of thick slabs or columns. It is also found in layers of granite.
  • A number of mineralogists attribute the gemstone to varieties of selenite, while others point to the similarity of its composition to labradorite, also known as sunstone

The glow that Fersman wrote about is a manifestation of adularescence caused by the scattering of light on stone fragments. In ultraviolet light, the orange luminescence of Belomorite is visible.

When the color of the sun is reflected in a gemstone, it seems as though a glow is coming from the depths. This is caused by the thin-layered structure of the mineral, where light beautifully refracts at the boundary of each layer and creates a fantastic combination of rainbow colors all the way to an even white. The answer is that, thanks to their specific composition, the layers do not merge together, but neither do they fall apart, because they are strongly compressed in the upper
