JEWELRY
The nugget from a distant African country is very difficult to process due to its natural softness and brittleness. Only a few jewelers decided to work with it, because the price of mineral crystals is high and the time lost in the event of failure is priceless. Yet those masters who are capable of this task create magnificent masterpieces of jewelry.
- Buyers naturally won’t find tanzanite jewelry at market stalls or in jewelry boutiques. Such jewelry is sold only by elite jewelry houses. This semi-precious stone is set in precious metals, so the cost of a product made from natural stone is high

SITE
One of the reasons for the high cost of stone is its rarity and limited availability. From the moment of its discovery to the present, only one deposit is known; in fact, the homeland of the mineral is Tanzania, Arusha Province, which is located southwest of Mount Kilimanjaro, at a distance of 60 km. The field known as Merelani has been divided into four blocks since 1990. Each of the blocks is being developed by different mining companies. Since 2004, 60% of all mineral reserves have been mined in one of the four blocks by the Tanzanian company Tanzanite One Group.
COLORS
Tanzanites, mined from the depths of the earth, are most often brown in color. To achieve a deep blue color, the stones are heat-treated. Minerals found on the surface are already endowed with an extraordinary blue-violet color because they have been exposed to natural temperatures. All extracted samples are divided into two types. Some are dominated by blue, others by purple. The proportion of one or the other is determined by the amount of chromium and vanadium in the mineral's chemical composition.
Nature also presents small samples of pink and lavender shades, and sometimes completely transparent. There are large green crystals. A combination of several colors often occurs in a single nugget.
HISTORY AND TRADITION
It all began in the summer of 1967. The Portuguese Manuel De Souzo set out on an expedition to Tanzania in search of rare rubies, assisted and accompanied by Maasai explorers - one of the largest tribes of indigenous inhabitants. Several weeks later, exhausted by the long fruitless search, the expedition discovered deposits of large purple-violet crystals. It happened in the Arusha Province, at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. Stone deposits formed in cracks, where changes occurred under the influence of rock pressure and high temperatures.
At first, the find was mistaken for sapphires, but the mineral turned out to be much softer. A little later, studies showed that the find was a variety of Zoisite - a relatively well-known and widespread mineral that had not been used in jewelry. A rare nugget risked remaining unnoticed and unknown. But as early as 1968, the stone attracted the attention of Henry Platt, vice president of the American jewelry company “Tiffany,” who named the gemstone tanzanite in honor of the mineral deposit.
Since then, despite all the difficulties in processing, tanzanite has been used to make expensive, exclusive jewelry. One version says that the famous “Heart of the Ocean” pendant from the film “Titanic” used a tanzanite insert, which looked brighter and more attractive than a blue sapphire
- The promotion of tanzanite jewelry was greatly facilitated by actress Elizabeth Taylor. It was incredibly suitable for products containing stone, which appealed to many fans.
- The largest cut tanzanite is on display at the Smithsonian Museum.
- The nugget named “Queen of Kilimanjaro” weighs over 200 carats. Such a rare crystal is set in a necklace and is surrounded by almost a thousand small diamonds.
Interesting fact:
- The largest cut tanzanite in the world, weighing 242 carats, belongs to Michael Scott, CEO of Apple. This stone is adorned with a tiara called the “Queen of Kilimanjaro.”
- The Smithsonian Research Institute in the United States of America also has a cut tanzanite weighing 122.7 carats.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
One of the interesting properties of tanzanite is optical pleochroism - the stone is able to change color depending on the viewing angle. Some samples may exhibit the alexandrite effect. This means that the mineral appears blue in daylight and turns purple under artificial light. There are also rare specimens equipped with a cat's eye effect.
Tanzanite is transparent and has a vitreous luster. It is a soft and fragile mineral, so not all jewelers are involved in its processing. When cutting the mineral, craftsmen try to enhance its natural blue color. The same specimens that nature did not endow with a rich sapphire color can be heated up to 500 °C - under the influence of temperature, all accompanying shades disappear and the blue becomes richer.
