SITE
The mining of iolites, which lie in deep layers of the Earth's crust, among rocks that appeared as a result of strong compression and heating, is carried out by:
- Brazil (local stones are relatively small and are mined in small quantities)
- In the countries of Central and Northern Europe.
In Poland, there are stones painted a light purple color. The most valuable and largest crystals (up to 12 cm in diameter) are mined in Norway. Bavarian iolites are very light, dark purple in color - Tanzania, Sri Lanka, India, Burma, Namibia, and Madagascar. This is where the highest-quality purple stones come from, distinguished by exceptional transparency and clarity
- Russia: deposits of not very large (up to 10 cm in diameter), but sufficiently high-quality gem iolites are found in the Urals, on the Kola Peninsula, in Karelia, Altai, and Yakutia
- Ukraine: there are small deposits of high-quality iolites here
- Britain
- Finland
- Canada
- USA
- In Central Asia. Iolites mined in the Pamir deposits appear at first glance to be very large (slightly smaller than a fist), but after cutting away the flawed areas, stones with a volume of at most 1 cm remain.3
COLOR
- Iolite crystals have pronounced pleochroism. Depending on the direction of the light rays, one and the same stone can appear deep purple, yellow-brown, or almost colorless.
- Pure crystals of the purple stone without foreign impurities are extremely rare in nature. The most commonly mined iolites contain many mineral inclusions. The red hue of the crystals indicates the presence of microscopic inclusions within them.hematite... Crystals containing particles of iron ore (most often magnetite) will begin to spark. The most valuable are transparent iolites, which have an adventurous appearance – with an inner golden sparkle that is characteristic of some gemstones.
- Iolites are not afraid of heat and never fade in the sun; however, in places where microscopic particles of zircon and apatite are dispersed, areas of local yellowing may appear on their surface. This property of the purple stone, well known to mineralogists, often helps them make the correct diagnosis.
- The hardness of iolite on the Mohs scale is 7.5.
- The surface of crystals with indistinct cleavage and orthorhombic symmetry is uneven or concave at the fracture.
- A characteristic feature of iolites is the presence of a greasy vitreous luster.
- Iolite crystals, most often 2 to 12 cm long, are either completely transparent or translucent. Their color, ranging from light blue to dark purple, is determined by the ratio of iron, magnesium, silicon, aluminum, and oxygen that make up the mineral’s chemical composition. The color of iolite depends to a considerable extent on the viewing angle and the way it is cut.
- Iolites are an ideal material for jewelry due to their low specific gravity.
Iolites, depending on their color, due to the significant content of one or another chemical element in the crystal composition, are usually divided into the following types:
- Cat's eye: These iolites are characterized by an inner glow with iridescent hues and a vertical white stripe right in the center. These stones are cut in the form of a cabochon.
- Water Sapphire: stones of this variety have a very light color (most often blue or light purple), a bright vitreous luster, and a high degree of clarity.
- Inkstone - iolite, subjected to a not very high-quality print and lacquered in a very dark color.
- Blood iolite: stones of this variety have an almost cherry color, thanks to the large admixture of ceresite.
- Tawny Sapphire: Minerals in this group exhibit a cat's-eye effect and are colored a vivid dark blue.
HISTORY AND TRADITION
Iolite is an extraordinarily beautiful mineral (synonymous names: dichroite, false sapphire, water sapphire or lynx sapphire, steinheilite, violet stone), better known in gemology as cordierite.
- it was named in honor of the French geologist and mining engineer Pierre Cordier, who made an important discovery while studying this stone – the effect of dichroism (the term for the ability of certain crystals to change color depending on the direction of the light ray)
- The name “iolite,” derived from the Greek word “iol” meaning “violet,” refers to the basic and most highly valued color of this stone, although the color palette of crystals found in nature includes all shades of blue
The first mentions of the violet gemstone, called the sailors’ stone, can be found in Scandinavian poetic legends about the brave Vikings, who plowed not only the northern seas but also sailed to distant southern waters. Historians who studied these legends initially suggested that the Vikings who set sail took this mysterious stone with them as a talisman, but it later turned out that it served as a compass for sailors.
- The creator of the unusual optical lens made of iolite, which helps determine the position of the sun even on overcast and rainy days, is the legendary Scandinavian seafarer and ruler of Greenland, Leif Ericsson the Happy (he was the first European to reach the shores of Central America, five centuries before Columbus).
- Thanks to iolite's unique ability to change its color depending on the angle at which light falls on it, this primitive navigation device more than once helped brave sailors who got lost in bad weather and strong storms find their way back to their native shores.
- With the help of a navigation lens, they could determine their position at sea or in the ocean in any weather after determining the cardinal directions.
- Even several centuries later, iolite lenses helped navigators of large seafaring ships navigate by the stars regardless of the time of day.
In Russia, iolites were discovered in 1856 in the Urals, during an expedition in which the Russian mineralogist N. took part.I.Koksharov. Around this time, thanks to the efforts of geologist Pierre Cordier, iolite, previously considered a variety of amethyst, was granted the status of an independent rock.
- Natural iolites are highly valued by the fairer sex living in Europe and the United Kingdom. Princess Diana and Margrethe, Queen of Denmark, wore beautiful jewelry with a purple gemstone.
- The largest (177 g) iolite adorns the exhibition at the British Museum in London.
- The enchanting depth of the sparkling iolite crystals, which to some extent resembles the bottomlessness of the ocean depths, led director James Cameron, who made the film “Titanic,” to consider that this gemstone could be used as a jewelry inlay in the famous “Heart.” Ocean pendant. At the last minute, however, the choice fell on a tanzanite of a suitable size.
Interesting to know! As late as the Middle Ages, the alchemist Nettesheim was able to link the planets of the solar system with the elements and subsequently determine which stones belong to which planet (elements).
| Color varieties | Compatible | Incompatible |
| Blue and transparent | Sapphire, amethyst, and lapis lazuli | Ruby, jasper, pomegranate, and smoky topaz |
| Purple | Opal, labradorite, and sapphire | Ruby, jasper, garnet, pearl, aquamarine, opal, rock crystal, and smoky topaz |
| Blue | Multicolored diamonds, aquamarine, and gemstones | Turquoise, sapphire, lapis lazuli, and blue topaz |
- transparent, white, and blue iolites are associated with the Moon,
- purple and lilac ones with Mercury, blue ones with Jupiter,
- with an optical effect or iridescent reflections with Uranus
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Some physical properties of iolite, which is an aluminum silicate of iron and magnesium, were already discovered by the ancient Vikings.
These tireless seafarers noticed that thin plates could be made from fine, easily workable crystals, which were then used as optical lenses to help determine the position of the sun (even after sunset)
