• Andradite differs from other minerals in its color variety – there are stones such as black, green, red, and yellow, or even mixed colors. The luster of the mineral is pronounced, vitreous.
• Various impurities alter the optical properties of the mineral lattice in different ways. The constant component is calcium; iron, chromium, etc. may also be present.

Depending on its color, andradite is divided into several types:

• Allochroite – blooms from reddish-brown to black. It is considered a healing stone that protects the home; in ancient times, it was used in the production of jewelry and household items.

• Topazolite (succinite) is a yellow mineral, usually with a honey tint, less often with a lemon or pink tint, found in the form of small grains. Outwardly, it is very similar to topaz and amber, which is how it got its name. A relatively rare variety of cut andradite stones weighing 2–3 carats is of great value to master jewelers. Topazolite occurs in Italy, Switzerland, and the Alps.

• Demantoid - the most valuable variety of andradite, contains a chromium admixture. It is a step-cut green stone with a yellow or pistachio tint. It shines very beautifully and brightly, which makes it very popular for decorating pendants and rings. Deposits of natural stone are located in Mexico, Zaire, and Sri Lanka.

• Shorlomite (pearl garnet) is a dark gray, almost black mineral with a pronounced luster. The stone contains titanium dioxide.

• Melanite is a black mineral with a high content of titanium dioxide. Outwardly, it differs greatly from other andradites. Melanite is very popular in Europe and is often used as a mourning and memorial decoration. The stone deposit is located in Germany.

• Colophonite is a red-colored mineral with a resinous luster.

• Gelletit. A subspecies of andradite with a pale marsh color, also sought after only among collectors.

 

Basically, andradites are valued as collector's stones. Almost all of its varieties have a rather fragile structure, which makes their use in jewelry processing very difficult.

• Demantoid and topazolite are used by jewelers to make jewelry.
• Shorlomit is gaining positions in the men's jewelry segment.
• Melanite is a popular element of church and ritual decoration among Europeans.

• Andradite also occurs in the USA (California, Arizona, New Jersey, Idaho, Alaska) and Russia (Kamchatka, Karelia, the Kola Peninsula, the Urals, Chukotka, Krasnoyarsk Krai), and the most beautiful and unusual variety of the mineral was discovered in Mexico.

HISTORY AND TRADITION

It was named in honor of the Brazilian mineralogist José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva, and he generally discovered four stones, but only one of them was given his name. The stone was probably first discovered in 1800 and was found in the Urals. Other names for the stone are polyadelphite or bredbergite. Andradite crystals form druses, veinlets, intergrowths, disseminations, and individual grains in cavities and fractures of rocks.

DEFINITION OF AUTHENTICITY

Counterfeit andradites are extremely rare, so their authenticity is usually not checked. But if necessary, laboratory research methods can be used for these purposes.
