COLOR AND VARIETIES

Goldstone is known by many names, including aventurine glass, gold star glass, monk's stone, stellaria, and monk's gold.All of these refer to the same thing.
Goldstone exists in color variants based on other elements.Copper can be replaced with cobalt or manganese; the resulting crystals have a more silvery appearance and are suspended in a strongly colored matrix corresponding to the ionic color, resulting in blue goldstone or purple goldstone.

Green goldstone, or chromium aventurine, forms its reflective particles from chromium oxides rather than from the elemental metal, but is otherwise quite similar.
Non-copper gold alloys are easier to work with during reheating thanks to less stringent reduction requirements and the higher melting points of manganese (1246 °C) and cobalt (1495 °C).

Reddish-brown goldstone – A variety that contains copper inclusions.This is the most common type.
Blue Goldstone – Cobalt is used in the mixture instead of copper.The glass is tinted blue, and the sparkling effect is provided by the above-mentioned minerals.

COMPOSITION

Copper-based aventurine glass, “red goldstone,” exists on a structural continuum with transparent red copper ruby glass and opaque “sealing wax” purpurin glass, all of which are striking glasses whose reddish colors are produced by colloidal copper.The key variable is control of the colloid size: goldstone has macroscopic reflective crystals; purpurin glass has microscopic opaque particles; copper ruby glass has submicroscopic transparent nanoparticles.

The outer layers of goldstone tend to have duller colors and a lower degree of sparkling aventurescence.This may be caused by poor crystallization, which simultaneously reduces the size of the reflective crystals and clouds the surrounding glass with non-reflective particles.It can also be caused by partial oxidation of copper, which causes it to dissolve again and form its usual transparent blue-green glass in the ionic solution.

During reheating for lampworking and similar applications, the working conditions should control temperature and oxidation as required for the original batch melt: keep the temperature below the melting point of copper (1084.62 °C) and use a reducing flame low in oxygen, or decomposition risk into the failure modes described above.

HISTORY AND LEGENDS

Another common name for the material is aventurine glass, derived from the original Italian name avventurina (from avventura, “adventure” or “chance”).It is called “del-roba” (Persian: دلربا) in Persian, meaning “charming”; or “monk’s gold” or “monk’s stone” from folklore associations with an unnamed monastic order.Goldstone also has a green brother (green Goldstone) and a blue brother (blue Goldstone).

This material is sometimes called sandstone when used in watch dials, despite its lack of resemblance to the porous, matte texture of natural stone.
In addition, "aventurine" glass is one of the few synthetic simulants that provides an eponym for similar natural stones.The name of the mineral " aventurine " is used for forms of feldspar or quartz with mica inclusions that give a similar sparkling appearance; the technical term for this optical phenomenon, " aventurescence ", is also derived from the same source.
