LOCATION
COLOR: it is a naturally occurring variety of quartz. It is a mixture of amethyst and citrine with zones of purple and yellow or orange.
LOCALITY
The crystal is VERY rare: the main natural source of rough ametrine in the world is located in the remote Anahi mine in Bolivia.
For this reason, ametrine is sometimes referred to as bolivianite (although it is also known as trystine).HISTORY AND TRADITION
Ametrine, also known as trystine or by the trade name bolivianite
The introduction of ametrine to the modern gemstone market came as a surprise, although the indigenous people of the region had known of this unique Bolivian gemstone deposit for several hundred years. The problem is that the area where the deposit is located is one of the most remote parts of Bolivia.Historical records show that the local Ayoreo tribe found and valued this unusual two-colored stone more than gold.
When the Spaniards conquered Bolivia and parts of western South America, they were mainly looking for gold and silver. The Ametrín region, where the Ayoreo tribe lived, was so remote that until the 17th The Spaniards did not visit it even for a century.Even today, it is not an easily accessible area.
Upon arriving in the area of the Ayoreo tribe, the group also included the soldier Don Felipe de Urriola y Goitia.Instead of gold and silver, all the Spaniards found were two-colored stones, which the locals valued greatly. It was only when Princess Anhai of the tribe fell in love with Don Felipe that the event occurred which brought the gemstone to Europe. The princess was so in love with Don Felipe that she gave him her precious necklace as a token of her eternal love. The necklace pendant was a beautiful two-tone stone. This gift gave rise to the “Legend of Princess Anahi and her love for Don Felipe”.Because the Spaniards found no gold or silver, they were soon ordered back to Spain, and Don Felipe had to return as well. That meant Princess Anahi had to stay behind, and then she gave the necklace to Felipe. The stone, with its beautiful yellow and purple colors, was a symbol of her undying love for him. There are various versions of what happened after Don Felipe's departure. The princess, distraught by her separation from Don Felipe, either disappeared by going into the mine workings that were the source of the gemstone, or simply vanished.
When Don Felipe returned to Spain in 1600, he presented the two-colored stone to the Spanish queen, and it was then that the unnamed unique two-colored stone was introduced to Europe.
Ametrine occurs in Russia, but nowhere else does it have gem quality, so it is not unique as a gemstone, but unique to Bolivia.Colors in better stones occur in more or less equal amounts of purple amethyst and yellow citrine. Each colored area is clearly separated from the colors alternating next to each other in the same crystal. When properly cut across the vertical or “C” axis of the crystal, these two colors are often perceived as alternating triangular color sections that clearly show the dramatic difference between two chemically distinct forms of quartz.Today, skilled artisans have developed cutting methods so that these two colors can blend and create a mixture of two colors that gives the impression of still other colors, which contributes to enhancing the stone.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
The color of the zones visible in ametrine is caused by different oxidation states of iron in the crystal. Citrine segments contain oxidized iron, while amethyst segments are unoxidized. Different oxidation states occur as a result of the temperature gradient across the crystal during its formation. Artificial ametrine is grown using the hydrothermal method with solutions doped with specific elements, followed by irradiation of the resulting crystals.
