Chalcopyrite, the official mineralogical name of the stone, appeared 300 years ago. This mineral has been mined for more than two millennia – even before our era, people developed deposits of copper and tin where they found this mineral.

And copper deposits are the most widespread on Earth. This gemstone has been called by various names over the centuries, but one name remains widespread – copper pyrite. It is no wonder that the mineral received the following names:

It should be noted that the mineral is very soft and oxidizes easily. The surface of the stone can be scratched with a simple razor blade. Impurities that form chalcopyrite are responsible for the color of the stone:

Chalcopyrite can only be dissolved in sulfuric acid (sulfur precipitates during this reaction). But this mineral is insoluble in hydrochloric acid. When interacting with air, another decorative stone is obtained - malachite. Such a process is lengthy, however, and can take centuries. The mineral has wide use in industry, where pure copper is obtained through decomposition.

DEFINITION OF AUTHENTICITY

To distinguish chalcopyrite from a fake, we should know what the natural gemstone looks like, because a fake, however skillful, will not have all the characteristic features of copper pyrite.

• Chalcopyrite has a characteristic greenish hue, a rather dull luster, and its shine is about half that of gold. The mineral is not highly durable; it is easy to break into pieces.
• You can determine the authenticity of the stone by running any sharp object over it. If it leaves a trace of black color with a greenish tint on it, it is chalcopyrite; a yellow color means it is gold.
