It is also known as the Russian emerald. The literal translation of the word from Greek is “double appearance”. It is beautifully richly colored, and its name is derived from the Greek (diopsis – meaning having two forms). This is because from one side it has one color, and from other angles it appears to us again in different shades. The prefix chrom indicates the corresponding impurities that color the mineral emerald green. Their number is significant - about 2%. Outwardly, the mineral is similar to emerald: the same herbaceous colors. But it also has other properties - lower hardness and a lower degree of fracture.
