Mother-of-pearl from shell is the shiny inner surface of the shells of some mollusks, especially pearl oysters and large marine bivalves such as tridacna or abalone (paua shell).

Mother-of-pearl is a material produced by some animals as part of their hard shell. As a rule, it is coated on the surface with a thin calcareous layer, which can be sanded off to reveal the underlying nacreous layer. Sometimes it contains small beads, the beginnings of tiny pearls.
Mother-of-pearl can be shaped in various ways, into all sorts of forms. It is found in the sea, mostly in tropical regions.

It comes from New Zealand, where the shells of these marine animals are collected along the coast and further processed. They are often up to 17 cm long and are used not only in jewelry making, but also as food. Paua shell is said to be very delicious. After sanding the top layer of the shell, a unique pattern and colors emerge, which are different for each shell. Thus, each piece of jewelry is a unique original, and the same one cannot be obtained anywhere in the world. Paua shells were also used as a decorative element on ceremonial figurines and other objects.

Mother-of-pearl is also used to make items for home decoration, figurines, statuettes, bowls, candle holders, jewelry boxes, containers, and many other things used as decorations. Crushed mother-of-pearl is used as a shimmering essence in eau de parfum.
