The main identifying feature of amphiboles is the rhombic to hexagonal shapes of cross-sections and especially the angle close to 120° between the two systems of perfect cleavage (110). In these sections, it is possible to observe symmetrical extinction with respect to cleavage. Longitudinal sections have clearly visible cleavage cracks parallel to the vertical axis; they extinguish either straight (orthorhombic amphiboles) or obliquely (common sections of monoclinic amphiboles). Their chemical composition directly affects their color and also their pleochroic colors; among other affected properties is the refractive index, which ranges from 1.59 to 1.74. Then a break between 0.003 and 0.072.

Minerals have no practical use. In the past, their finely acicular to fibrous aggregates, so-calledasbestos whose placing on the market is currently prohibited not only by Czech laws (the Chemicals Act).
