It is most often lumpy or granular. Its crystals are often abundant, either as cubes or octahedra, or as combinations of cube and octahedron. When broken, it shatters into small cubes.
It occurs in hydrothermal ore veins and is one of the most abundant sulfides in most ore deposits. It is primarily lead ore, but also a source of silver, which is often present as an impurity.
HISTORY AND TRADITION
Galena is an abundant mineral, lead sulfide, PbS. Formerly also called galena or lead glance. It was named by Pliny the Elder (77–79) after the Greek term for lead ores, “galene.”
Galena (lead glance, lead sulfide – PbS) is an abundant mineral that crystallizes in the cubic system. The older Czech name is leaden bleak. Crystals are often abundant and known from many localities in fine form, mostly intergrown and sometimes considerably large.
forms steel-gray, metallically lustrous, opaque, well-defined crystals reaching sizes of up to 14 mm, which intergrow with one another and among which dark brown sphalerite crystals with a dull to vitreous luster grow. Most galena crystals have a nice skeletal development.
