• Taaffeite gemstones are supplied by Tanzania today. The fat mines in Tunduru, however, have yielded only a few hundred pebbles over many years. Their dimensions are small, but eight-carat specimens can also be found. Even rarer are nine-carat taaffeites.
• The record holders among taaffeites are Sri Lankan stones: an uncut 71.1-carat specimen and a violet-purple faceted taaffeite just under 10 carats. The largest faceted musgravite weighs 5.93 carats.
• Raw materials from various regions are of collector and scientific interest: Russia (Karelia, the Urals, eastern Siberia), the USA, Myanmar, Australia, Antarctica (Enderby Land).
• Crystal grains are found in metamorphically altered limestone layers all over the planet. But unsuitable for processing.
• The taaffeite variety is musgravite, 3.69 carats, mined in Tanzania.

HISTORY AND TRADITION

Taaffeite only came to the world's attention relatively recently, in the middle of the 20th century. century. In the autumn of 1945, Edward Charles Taaffe, a gemstone researcher, made a surprising discovery. At that time, the scientist was working on the study and classification of very rare specimens. During a detailed examination of minerals in the cubic system, he discovered a specimen that shows obvious differences. The professor of gemology was forced to send the stone to London, to a specialized laboratory, to confirm the discovery. After the study was completed, the laboratory confirmed that this mineral was indeed unique in its structure. For in-depth analysis, the sample was sent to the Mineralogy Department of the British Museum. Given that the stone had been cut, the consent of the Irish earl was required for a small piece of the gemstone to be cut out. After microchemical and X-ray diffraction studies, a result was obtained confirming that the indicators of this sample do not match those of other gemstones. The main identifying characteristic of the mineral is the double refraction of light rays and the ability to shimmer in several shades. Taaffeite was named after the scientist in 1951.
