The first discovered field was the Japanese island of Iwagi. Later, mineral deposits were discovered in India and then in the Kalahari Desert near Namibia. Small amounts of the mineral were found in Italy, Canada, Tajikistan, and Australia (the Tamworth mines, Woods Mine, New South Wales). The remaining deposits continue to be mined in Japan (in syenite reserves at the Iwagi Islet mine), India (the Madhya Pradesh mine), and South Africa (Cape Province, the Kuruman mines, as well as the N'Chwaning and Wessels mines).

HISTORY AND TRADITION
Sugilite is a young gemstone discovered less than a century ago. The birthplace of the first discovery is the Japanese island of Iwagi. The mineral was named after its discoverer, the Japanese professor of mineralogy Ken-ichi Sugi. The first samples extracted in 1944 were not of good quality. After 10 years, sugilite was found in India, but the most beautiful gemstone specimens were not discovered until 1976 at an African deposit. Since then, sugilite has become well-known and very popular.
Due to its unusual color, the mineral has acquired several more beautiful names:
- Lawulitis. This is what jewelers call samples of the lavender-colored mineral.
- Royal Azelle. This name is associated with the area near one of the deposits and also with the purple color of the nuggets mined there.
- Purple turquoise. So the gemstone was named for the veins characteristic of turquoise and its dull luster.
- Wesselsite. This name is derived from the name of the world's largest mine in Africa – Wessels.
Sugilite is formed by aggregates of densely intergrown prismatic crystals. The lilac gemstone lies alongside such minerals as albite, pectolite, zircon, aegirine, and apatite.
Sugilite is young, but mineralogists already know that the stone's reserves are negligible and will soon run out. Over all the years of deposit development, the total volume of extracted mineral amounted to approximately 5 tonnes. This makes the lilac gemstone even more sought after.
