Larimar is a semi-precious stone that is the result of volcanic processes occurring in the Miocene, formed in cavities of solidified basaltic lava. Natural stone, with its untouched beauty, invites philosophical reflection. Looking into its depth and colors, one begins to wonder how this splendor came into being, what secrets nature encoded into this cascade of shades.
Larimar stone, considered a landmark in the Dominican Republic, has several synonymous names.
This is called:
- Haitian turquoise,
- Atlantis, (according to legend, this gemstone was known to the inhabitants of the sunken Atlantis);

The honor of the official discovery of the new mineral belongs to the Dominican jeweler Miguel Mendez, who in 1974 found several beautiful stones resembling turquoise in the debris of volcanic rock at the foot of the Baoruco ridge.
Mendes, convinced that the hardness of the stones found far exceeded that of turquoise, sent them for examination to the Smithsonian Institute of Natural History in Washington, D.C. His results confirmed the discovery of a new mineral. As the discoverer, Mendes gave the stone the resonant name "Larimar," composed of the first three letters of the name Larissa (the name of his youngest daughter) and the Spanish word "mar" – "sea".
- Larimar is also known as the “Dolphin Stone” or the “Atlantis Stone,” whose ancient wisdom and healing power it is said to radiate. According to legend, what is now the Dominican Republic was part of the mythical civilization of Atlantis. Allegedly, what made Atlantis so exceptional according to legend was a beautiful blue stone that brought healing abilities to this entire civilization. Its description bears a striking resemblance to Larimar.
