TALISMANS AND SPELLS
Talismans have the following effects on a person:

Regular wearing of such a talisman increases the power of intuition and helps improve magical power.

- Smoky topaz of light and golden colors has a more positive effect, but less pronounced.
- Products used for amulets may have an abstract form: the stone is therefore less processed, carries more positive energy, and protects its owner.
- When making the talisman, it is not recommended to cut the natural stone: this way, it retains its healing and magical properties to a greater extent.
HEALTH EFFECTS
According to research, the mineral with a distinctive brown color has a positive effect on the human body in the following cases:
- in the treatment of alcohol addiction
- to eliminate gambling and drug addiction
- in the presence of nervous overload and a tendency toward prolonged depression
- to relieve the most obvious symptoms of mental disorders
Healers used light-colored pointed pieces of this natural gemstone for surgical procedures.
CLEANING AND CHARGING
- For maintenance, simply wipe with a soft cloth when the stone is dirty to prevent cracks and scratches on the edges.
- However, this gemstone has remarkably high durability, making it safe to care for even using mechanical action: in case of heavy soiling, a product with this stone can be cleaned with a brush and a coarse cloth.
- The stone can be washed with a soap solution saturated with water, after which it should be rinsed with a sufficient amount of running water.
- It is preferable to dry such a product in the sun: in this way, the stone absorbs a greater amount of solar energy, which gives it greater richness and expressiveness.
COMPATIBILITY WITH OTHER STONES
- The mineral pairs well with stones such as rose quartz and rock crystal. Framing a large stone with gold or silver will also be successful.
ZODIAC SIGNS
The zodiac sign determines how sensitive a particular person will be to the effects of the smoky quartz stone:
- Cancer, Scorpio may experience some discomfort when wearing rauchtopaz products due to their natural secrecy and heightened sensitivity: the effect of the mineral will strengthen these character traits, making representatives of these signs more withdrawn.
- For representatives of the fire signs (this applies to Sagittarius, Leo and Aries), they are contraindicated because they can turn them into true dreamers: when wearing the stone regularly, they will feel an uncharacteristic rigidity, which will leave their desire for active action only at the stage of fantasy.
- Wearing a talisman made from this stone Capricorn: the stubborn nature of these people will become more balanced, which will make it easier for them to perceive life with its hardships and storms.
- Virgo, by regularly wearing jewelry made from this stone, becomes more restrained and calmer.
- Pisces and Gemini jewelry and talismans with a dark-colored stone will help you remain calm, balanced, and mentally strong in difficult situations. It will be most useful for them for therapeutic purposes and for the prevention of diseases of the cardiovascular system.
- Libra by regularly wearing smoky topaz jewelry will become more purposeful.
- Aquarius this mineral may cause difficulties: against a background of natural calm, people belonging to this zodiac sign may develop a tendency toward anger and increased nervousness.
When choosing “your” stone, you can focus not only on your date of birth. Much more important for a person are their own feelings from communicating with the mineral. If you hold the gemstone in your hand and feel warmth and peace, it will benefit you regardless of your zodiac sign.
COLORS AND SHADES
Smoky quartz, as a variety of quartz, stands out with its smoky brown shade, which, even when the mineral contains a small amount of copper or iron, has golden inclusions.
In nature, there is a large number of varieties of smoky quartz according to the degree of the stone's color and its shades. The most common color is considered to be the brown color of the stone, however there are transparent and translucent options that seem to be filled with mist inside, which makes the stone mysterious and attractive. Rare specimens whose color is close to black are called morions, but their occurrence is limited. Brown-colored crystals occur more frequently.
Its closest relatives in terms of external characteristics and structure should be considered rock crystal, rose quartz, amethyst, and citrine
SITE
The discovery of this gemstone took place in the mountains of Switzerland, Madagascar, and also in Brazil. Several deposits have been discovered in the mountains of America in which the mineral occurs in intergrown crystal branches. It can be either completely transparent or translucent.
Mining smoky quartz is neither a difficult nor a rare process: mineral deposits are often found in hydrothermal veins of rocks adjacent to the site where rock crystal is mined. A special technique is used for extracting large gemstone samples, which can reach a weight of 200 kg or more.
HISTORY AND TRADITION
The appearance of smoky topaz in history is due to the difference in its name: in different periods of time, the mineral had different names, and its magical and healing properties were interpreted in various ways. The names of the stone varied among different peoples, and in different periods the meaning of the stone rauchtopaz was largely determined by its color or occurrence:
- The oldest names for smoky topaz are “Colorado diamond,” gypsy, “radium diamond,” and italchik.
- In the Middle Ages, physicians called it raukhkvarts, which more accurately described the nature of the stone.
- The English most often used the name “kerngorm” — this is the name of mountains in Scotland (the Cairngorm Mountains), where a similar mineral was found.
- In Russia, the "gopher" was called a stone associated with its color. The Russians also called smoky quartz "smear".
- Eastern peoples named the mineral the "Buddha's stone" for its attractiveness and the enchanting play of smoky facets.
- French connoisseurs of the beauty of this unusual stone gave it the name “Alençon diamond,” due to its external characteristics and its place of extraction—the city of Alençon, located in France.
INTERESTING FACTS
- According to the generally recognized classification, this gemstone should be classified as a third-order gemstone, just like semi-precious ornamental stones, which include lapis lazuli, rose quartz, and jasper.
- The mineral most often has a brown or smoky shade, but there is also a special subspecies of completely black color. It bears the name morion, which is extremely rare.
- Thanks to its attractive “appearance,” smoky quartz has long been noticed by connoisseurs of beauty. Interestingly, it was men who first paid attention to its beauty, beginning to wear it in cufflinks and decorative pins.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Despite its name, smoky quartz is not structurally related to topaz. It may contain various components; the stone belongs to island aluminum silicates. The prefix “rauch” translated from German means “smoke”: it is a characteristic smoky color that gives the stone a special charm and appeal. And the smoke is silicon dioxide, that is, quartz. Irradiation gives color and its shades, as well as the cloudiness of the mineral.
Scientists reached this conclusion based on an analysis of the places where the stone was mined: it is most often found in granite rocks, which have a naturally occurring radioactive background.
Based on these observations, various studies of the mineral were conducted and the following results were obtained:
- After irradiation, the transparent rock crystal acquired a smoky color, which means it became smoky quartz.
- Rutile, which loses its color due to destruction as a result of increased temperature, is responsible for the mineral acquiring a yellow hue.
- The smoky specimen changes completely into citrine when the stone is heated to a temperature of 300-350 °C.
The mineral hardness index is high and amounts to 7 points according to the generally recognized Mohs scale. This makes it possible to use smoky quartz to produce various artistic objects with high precision and smooth lines.
