HISTORY AND TRADITION
Other names: Volcanic glass, Apache Tears, “smoking mirror” (Aztecs)
Obsidian was known to humanity as early as prehistoric times. Thanks to its hardness and exceptionally sharp edges after being broken, it was among the first materials from which people made tools, arrowheads, and knives. Archaeological findings show that obsidian was widely used more than 10,000 years ago.
Paleolithic and Neolithic – scrapers, points, and knives were made from obsidian (finds up to 9,000 years old).
Mesoamerica – Maya and Aztecs
- In Mexico and Guatemala, obsidian had a sacred significance. The Maya and Aztecs used it to make weapons, ceremonial daggers, and so-called obsidian mirrors, which were used as tools for divination, magical rituals, and communication with the gods.
- It was believed that an obsidian mirror opens a gateway to other worlds and reveals hidden truth.
- Priests used it to look into the future, and warriors believed it would bring them strength and protection in battle.
Ancient Egypt
- Egyptian priests used obsidian as a protective stone during rituals.
- It was part of amulets that were meant to protect the deceased on their journey to the afterlife.
Greece and Rome
- The Greeks called obsidian after “Obsius” – a Roman citizen who allegedly first brought it from Ethiopia.
- In ancient Rome, it was used to make jewelry, ornaments, and even surgical instruments – their edges were so fine that they could make more precise cuts than metal scalpels.
Indigenous tribes of America
- In many Indigenous cultures, obsidian was considered a "stone of spiritual protection".
- It was used for ritual sacrifices, fumigation, and also as a tool for driving away evil spirits.
Medieval Europe
Thanks to this tradition, obsidian is now perceived not only as a protective stone, but also as a powerful tool for self-discovery – much as it once served priests and shamans to see beyond the boundaries of the ordinary world.
