They were also popular in India, Persia, and China.Corundum is a group of minerals. They are linked by physical properties, chemical composition, and structure. For a long time, it was believed that different varieties of corundum were independent minerals. But then geology and chemistry developed significantly. And it was clear that all the minerals of the group, which differ in appearance, are merely different varieties of the same corundum.

Why does the stone have such a name? It is assumed that the name comes from the Sanskrit words “kuruvinda”, “kauruntaka”, which translate as ruby. 
In different countries, corundum is called by different names, and among the most remarkable names you will find the following:

• Oriental emerald;
• almandine sapphire;
• Oriental amethyst.

The crystal is known to people by many names. Some of them depended on the area where mining took place. So the old Russian specimens were known by the name “Yakhont”. In this case, the ruby was called “scarlet yahont” and the sapphire, or rather blue corundum, “azure”.

One such example is a unique English sapphire rose weighing 31 carats. In the seventeenth century, it was the property of the British educator Henry Sloane. This beautiful jewel inspired the renowned fantasy writer David Eddings. In his novels about the magical kingdom of Elenia, the Bhelliom stone is copied from an English treasure and endowed with tremendous magical power.
• In the United States of America, there is a collection of presidential portraits made from low-value crystals, such as white ones.

• The British Museum of Natural History houses the Edward Ruby, the most famous of the cut rubies. Its weight is 167 carats.
• The Dutch jewelry house owns the pale blue sapphire "Blue Princess". It is recognized as the most perfect aesthetic and weighs 114 carats.
• The Diamond Fund in Moscow houses the Cornflower Blue Ceylon sapphire with a violet hue. Its weight is 260 carats. The stone is set in an openwork gold brooch and is surrounded by diamonds.
