- can also be blue or green
- it is a mineral from the borate mineral class, crystallizing in the monoclinic crystal system, usually forming nodular, kidney-shaped, and massive aggregates that are either colorless or white to beige; more rarely, it also forms tabular crystals that exhibit a vitreous luster on the crystal surfaces
Howlite, also known as magnesite, is a calcium borosilicate hydroxide mineral that crystallizes in the form of masses, nodules, and occasionally small prismatic crystals.
This commonly occurs in a color scheme consisting of chalk white with black veining.
COMPOSITION: it is calcium borosilicate.
COLOR: the most common is white magnesite, mined from many deposits. The mineral is also pink, brown, gray, or yellow; it all depends on the impurities that make up its composition. If the iron content predominates, the stone appears brownish and may have a deep yellow color. It absorbs dye well, which is why magnesite beads painted in various colors are very often found for sale. After that, the stone retains its healing and magical properties. Jewelry with multicolored minerals is very popular among gemstone connoisseurs. Decorative stone used for finishing house facades is usually left in its natural color in room design.
SITE
The first fossil was discovered in Magnesia, which is located in Greece. One of the largest mines was discovered there. The breed contained in them aroused interest among the local population. They attempted to fire the ore, as a result of which it turned out that it can withstand high temperatures. Since then, magnesite has been used as a refractory material. Its deposits occur in the form of large layers, thanks to which it has found application in some industrial sectors. In the largest deposits, at medium and shallow depths, such masses are formed as a result of hydrothermal processes. The crystal-granular formations of the mineral were exposed to hot alkaline solutions, which led to the formation of ore.
In addition to its original discovery in Nova Scotia, Howlite can also be found in Germany, Serbia, Turkey, and the United States. In the United States, there are two states with very important deposits: California and Nevada. In both places are the only mines in the world where Howlite has been found in crystalline form.
HISTORY AND TRADITION
The ancient origin of magnesite is a historical fact. Its healing, magical, and also fire-resistant properties were already known in antiquity, and people could use the mineral for its intended purpose.
- Howlite was first discovered in 1868 near the town of Windsor in Nova Scotia. Henry How (a well-known Canadian chemist and geologist) was alerted to a peculiar mineral that had appeared in a gypsum mine near his office at the nearby King's College. He examined this unusual crystal and identified it as an entirely new mineral. He originally named it “silicoborocalcite,” which at the time referred to its chemical structure. Later, after his death, James Dwight Dana (a well-known American geologist and volcanologist) renamed it "Howlite" in his honor.
