Murano glass – luxurious Venetian art with the soul of history
Murano glass is among the most famous and luxurious types of glass in the world.
The name comes from the island of
Murano in the Venetian Lagoon, where this unique glass has been produced for more than 700 years.
What is Murano glass?
Murano glass is handmade artistic glass, created by melting a mixture:
- silicon dioxide (the basis of glass)
- soda and limestone
- potassium
The mixture is melted at temperatures around 1500 °C until a liquid mass is formed, which glassmakers shape by hand.
The following is often added to glass:
- real gold or silver (thin sheets)
- minerals and metal oxides to create vivid colors and patterns
The result is original products – no two pieces are the same.
Why is Murano glass so expensive?
Murano glass is not ordinary glass – it is an artistic craft with a long tradition. Its price is higher for several reasons:
- handmade – each piece is unique
- centuries-old know-how passed down from generation to generation
- use of precious materials (gold, silver)
- artistic value – often collector's pieces
History of Murano glass
Its history dates back to the time of Venice and the influence of the Byzantine Empire.
- 1291 – glassmakers were moved to the island of Murano due to the risk of fires in the city
- a powerful guild of glassmakers with a privileged status was established
- Murano gained a monopoly on glass production in Europe
- decline came after the plague (1630) and the fall of the republic (1797, Napoleon Bonaparte)
- in the 20th
century, production transformed into an artistic discipline
Today, Murano is a symbol of luxury, quality, and tradition.
How to recognize genuine Murano glass?
Unfortunately, there are many imitations on the market. You can recognize the original by:
- certificate of authenticity (Murano Glass Certificate)
- handmade – minor imperfections are natural
- rich colors and depth of patterns
- higher prices (suspiciously cheap pieces are often imitations)
It is estimated that up to 40% of products on the market are counterfeits.
Why do customers love Murano glass?
- looks luxurious and elegant
- each piece is an original work of art
- pairs beautifully with minerals and silver
- ideal as a gift with value and a story
